Given all the changes to animal production underway, the Food and Drugs Act, Health of Animals Act, Feeds Act and their associated regulations should be amended to implement the following:
- Antibiotics are used strictly for treatment. No use for growth promotion will be permitted.
- Production aids are eliminated unless to assist a treatment regime. Such aids are unnecessary in production regimes that focus on sustainability and extensification.
- No routine addition of medication to animal feed. The Compendium of Medicating Ingredients Brochures, and the regulations associated with it, are removed.
